FAQs
General FAQs
Our systems do not currently allow for automatic online banking payments and we would normally request payment by card. Advance payments may be made by cheque, provided a minimum of 7 days is allowed for the cheque to be cleared.
In the event that personal property is left behind at the hotel or restaurant and you are unable to collect it, this can be returned by post subject to an additional charge dependent on the weight of the item(s) and a minimum administration charge of £15.
Our opening hours are subject to seasonal variations and we endeavour to keep the section towards the very bottom of each website page up to date. Special arrangements may come into force for and around Bank Holiday periods, particularly Christmas and the New Year.
The Star Inn accepts Mastercard, Visa and American Express (Amex). We regret that we do not accept Diners cards.
The vast majority of our visitors arrive by car (the postcode for SatNav purposes is YO62 5JE). The Restaurant has its own carpark and there is additional parking at Cross House Lodge. There is no public transport option to Th e Star; the nearest bus route being a little over a mile from the Restaurant, and, whilst the closest train station is Malton, York or Thirsk are often more logistically suitable. In view of our remote location, taxi bookings must be made prior to your visit. For those looking to arrive by helicopter, we will use our best endeavours to make landing space available, but responsibility for ascertaining its suitability remains with the pilot/helicopter provider.
The Star Inn itself is not licensed for wedding and civil ceremonies, but the Wheelhouse at Cross House Lodge is licensed. St Saviour's Church at Harome is in easy walking distance of both the Lodge and the Restaurant.
Restaurant FAQs
We generally accept bookings up to 12 months in advance. Restaurant bookings may be cancelled or changed up to 24 hours prior to your reservation time for parties of up to 5 people. For larger groups of 6 or more, we would require 7 days’ notice. Where staffing levels allow and, at the absolute discretion of the Duty Manager, tables may be made available for ‘walk-ins’ in our Pub. However, booked diners will always be our priority.
Please contact our Reservations team on 01439 770397 or email reservations@thestarinnatharome.co.uk.
Many of our Restaurant visitors are celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, and our online system permits notes to be added to this effect. However, if you have any particular requests, please contact us via our restaurant@thestarinnatharome.co.uk email address. We are happy for customers to bring along their own special cake to be enjoyed after dessert/cheese course as part of a group celebration. Should you wish to offer the cake in place of the dessert course, we can serve this for you subject to our current 'cake-age' charge multiplied by the number of diners in your group. The charge shall include cream or ice cream to accompany the cake, where this is requested.
We have a Starlets Menu for younger children, which can be viewed on our website. Please make us aware of highchair requirements or if you would like to bring a pushchair into the Restaurant as some tables are more suitable than others!
Full or partial advance payment may be required for certain menus and events. However, for normal restaurant bookings, we take no deposit, just credit card details to secure your booking, which will only be used in the event that a reservation is cancelled outside of our Cancelation policy periods. Please note for Restaurant bookings, Windcave (our card provider) has a Pre-Authorisation procedure and you may note a temporary transaction of £1, which is subsequently removed from your account by your own provider. (Details of Windcave’s terms and conditions can be viewed on their website.)
Our online bookings system permits diners to advise us of the more standard food allergies and intolerances. If any dietary requirements are outside of these standard allergies and intolerances, and might require additional changes to the dishes on our menus, please contact us a minimum of 2 days prior to your planned visit to establish that we can cater for your requirements, including simplified food choices.
Please refer to our Access Statement for general information. Wheelchairs can only be sited in our New Dining Room using the middle entrance to the Restaurant and certain of our tables cater for wheelchairs more comfortably than others. We recommend making your booking via restaurant@thestarinnatharome.co.uk to ensure a suitable table allocation.
Assistance dogs only are permitted in the Restaurant. Other canine visitors are welcome at our garden tables.
Our dress code is the ubiquitous 'Smart Casual'.
Bookings for groups of 5 or more cannot currently be made online and we recommend calling us directly or emailing restaurant@thestarinnatharome.co.uk.
The Star Inn holds one Michelin star. It was first awarded a Michelin star in 2002 and has held this accolade for 20 years of Andrew Pern’s tenure.
We do not take bookings for our Pub or Gardens and walk-in bookings are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, with our booked Restaurant diners retaining priority. Subject to these qualifications, we are happy to serve drinkers in our Pub and at the front of the Pub.
A discretionary 12.5% service charge is added to restaurant bills, but you are welcome to request that this is removed in full or amended, as you wish.
We generally recommend allowing at least 3 hours for Tasting Menus and 2 hours for the À la Carte Menu. If you have any time constraints, such as a taxi booking, please advise our Front of House team.
Cross House Lodge FAQs
We accept room bookings in conjunction with dining reservations up to 12 months in advance, subject to a non-refundable deposit of £100 per room for single room bookings (and the full Bed and Breakfast rate for all rooms, for group bookings).
Room bookings can be amended subject to an administration charge of £25 per room, but only provided that this does not conflict with our cancellation policy.
Where a room booking is cancelled within 72 hours of your intended arrival date, your deposit will be forfeited and an additional charge will be made on your card for the balance of the room B&B rate plus any second and subsequent nights booked, unless the room can be re-let at the full brochure tariff.
Where room bookings are made on behalf of others, the person paying the deposit is deemed to have full responsibility for all the rooms they have confirmed. The condition shall also apply to group bookings where the entire group booking is cancelled less than one month before the intended arrival date. All cancellations must be made in writing and acknowledged by The Star Inn. You may wish to consider Travel Insurance with respect to your planned visit.
Rooms are available for check-in from 3pm and check-out is by 11am on the following day.
Many rooms at Cross House Lodge can accommodate additional child guests of varying ages and sizes. Our Barn Two room is often used as a family room due to the purpose-built bunk beds. Please contact our Reservations Team to discuss the best options.
A £100 non-refundable deposit is taken for each individual room booking. Please refer to Advance Booking above.
Well behaved small dogs may be booked into Rooms 6, 7 and 8, which are located adjacent to the Lodge carpark and have direct access to outdoor grassed areas. Our online booking system permits canine guests to be added to bookings for these rooms.
The Star Inn has 12-bedroomed accommodation at Cross House Lodge, literally on the other side of the road to the Restaurant. As an Inn with a dining reputation, we normally take room bookings only in conjunction with a table reservation. Exceptions may be made midweek or by special arrangement but we regret that we do not vary from this rule for Fridays, Saturdays, High Days or Holidays.
Towels, bath robes, shampoo, body lotion and soap are provided in our bathrooms. In our rooms, we provide tea and coffee making facilities, TVs with Freeview channel access, Roberts radios and hair dryers. Other facilities, such as an iron and ironing board, can be arranged with Reception.
Voucher FAQs
All our vouchers can be purchased online. It is also possible to redeem a voucher online with respect to the £100 deposit payment required for single room bookings.
Our only fixed price menu is our Tasting Menu. Whilst our vouchers are all monetary vouchers, we will always offer a voucher with a denomination equal to two Tasting Menus.
Vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and can be redeemed in either The Star Inn at Harome Restaurant or at Cross House Lodge.
Retaining voucher information is the responsibility of the Purchaser and voucher details must be provided to allow redemption.
We regret that vouchers are not transferrable from The Star Inn at Harome.
